Very valid observation. As all supply chains are being re-evaluated so will be pharma. Pharma is equally critical if not more than semi-conductors, chemicals, IT services and so on.

The whole context is here. Without full context it sounds alarming…

However, its only regards the vaccine shortage in EU and how they lament that their industries cannot produce enough and is a way to pressurise india to send them vaccines(and like the article says india has helped a lot of countries so far). It’s not related to “pharmaceutical products” in general… just the vaccine
At the end of the day as long as indian companies continue providing quality at low cost there’s no issues here. It isn’t about supply chains and the covid situation in india currently.

I suppose a lot of it has to do with the fact that for a long time in my humble opinion US has become more of a country for corporates than fundamentally being democrats. Now with Pfizer making over $4 billion on profit on vaccines alone, they do not want other countries specifically India to manufacture in bulk and sell at low prices. Specifically if they can throttle India it benefits big Pharma.

Another point to be notes is this huge discussion around efficacy. Efficacy among different vaccines can be compared only if the sample set is exactly the same which is not true in case of Covid vaccines. I am sure Pfizer in India or Brazil will have a far lower efficacy than the 90% that they are bragging off currently.

China is out to strangle India’s bulk drug makers. The government needs to heed the industry’s SOS.

India China News: China is out to strangle India’s bulk drug makers. The government needs to heed the industry’s SOS. - The Economic Times (indiatimes.com)
Sharing latest article from ET Prime, where the local industry is calling for Anti Dumping duty on China Imports which are killing the local manufacturing

Summary :-
India’s dependence on China for raw materials has swelled to roughly 65% to 70% over time. As seen in the cases of Arch and Balaji, experts say China has adopted a well-orchestrated strategy. First, it entices drug makers who make the final medicines with jaw-dropping prices. In the next move, as local competition is eliminated, it grabs control over pricing. Although prices spiral, it is too late — the buyers have no alternatives

Considering that the universe of stocks in the underlying index has expanded, the fund will likely incur some additional expenses while buying into these stocks. It could also lead to some short-term transitional impact on its performance and lead to a higher turnover
