Green Hydrogen as a Fuel - Indian Companies leading the Green Revolution

My understanding is that the technical bids were opened on 13th Dec and that is how the names were declared.
The financial bids are under review by the govt and the final list of awardees wound be declared thereafter. This date is not known. you may refer this article below.

As I can see the project is coming up with collaboration with the global green hydrogen firm from Germany [GreenH Electrolysis], which announced that it will construct a green hydrogen production facility with a fueling station, custom-built to help kickstart the "Hydrogen for Heritage” of Indian Railways.

Not sure if GreenH electrolysis have their own Fuel cell technology

Do you see any reason why no bid is there from Tata Power? Are the management willing to enter or not?

They are silent on Green hydrogen and Electrolyser manufacturing.
They must have evaluated and for the time being they must have postponed their decision.

In any case they are already in to Solar, wind, hydro, thermal, T&D and now for lithium ion battery they have acquired land in Gujarat.

Anyway, Renewable energy such as Solar wind hydro is the starting point for Green hydrogen production

Green Hydrogen Value Chain and stock ideas:
Please feel free to add any other companies venturing into the below mentioned space.
image

  1. Energy providers
  • Renewable Energy: These companies will provide renewable energy for the production of Green Hydrogen. Ex: Adani Green, GAIL, JSW etc & other Oil & Gas companies venturing into Renewable energy
  • Biofules: Companies producing energy from Biomass. Ex: Praj Industries
  1. Water Supply & Treatment: Companies supplying pure water which is very essential for the production of H2.
Ex: Va Tech Wabag, Tata Chemicals, Ion Exchange

  2. Electrolysers manufacturing: Companies manufacturing electrolysers.
Ex: BHEL, L&T, Reliance, JSW Neo Energy, Waaree, Oriana

  3. Hydrogen Storage: Companies making special storage units like cryogenic tanks for Hydrogen storage.
    Ex: Inox India, Linde India

  4. Transportation: Gas & Pipeline companies may venture out for liquid hydrogen transport.
Ex: GAIL, Petronet, Adani Total Gas (IDK)
    Shipping companies and ports
    Ex: GE Shipping, Adani Ports

  5. Renewable Energy Storage: Renewables energy sources are not reliable to produce energy consistently, hence lot of Batteries would be required to store them.
Ex: HBL Power, Waaree Solar, Amaron, Exide

A couple of points:
(1) On.Energy storage, batteries may be preferred for storage of small amount of energy… However for grid scale where large amount of energy to be stored, the emerging trend is to go for hydro pumping storage due to low cost , 50-100 years life cycle and no import content in construction where as lithium ion batteries are expensive with import content would be bulky for mega energy storage, batteries would require frequent maintenance and low life cycle of batteries.

(2) On electrolyser,/ fuel cell, a lot of developments taking place very fast and RO water may not be required.

Ahead of Gujarat Summit.

Torrent Power signed an agreement to invest ₹474 billion ($5.69 billion) to create solar power projects with 3,450 MW and 7,000 MW capacity, green hydrogen and ammonia manufacturing plants, and distribution networks in cities including Ahmedabad and Surat.

NTPC proposed a further investment of ₹700 billion ($8.40 billion) for fuel cell electric vehicle mobility, hydrogen blending with natural gas, production of green chemicals such as ammonia and methanol, and 5GW hydrogen-based energy storage projects.

Again don’t see Tata Power in the list.

Green Hydrogen Tender-Two companies seek zero incentive and Reliance seeks the least incentive.

How about compressors? Isn’t that required in Hydrogen processing chain?

This is from Kirloskar Pneumatics concall

“Now, the next question you asked is on green hydrogen. Now, we do not specifically look at
whether it’s green, blue, gray hydrogen because we are agnostic to it. What we do is, we make
compressors for handling hydrogen. At the moment, we have reciprocating compressors for
handling hydrogen at the refineries. This has been running for quite some time, and they are
basically used in diesel refining. Now, the new compressors that we are developing is for
higher pressure storage, which will go anywhere between 350 bar to 700 bar pressure, which
means this hydrogen after compression can be stored and transported. Now, this compressor is
under development with, IIT Bombay. First phase has been completed in terms of mechanical
scoping. We are now getting into building the prototype and hopefully we should have a
modular design where we can make for pressure anywhere from 300 bar going up to 700 bar
and we should have this in the next 18 months.”

High-pressure compressors are required and there seems to be shortage of that in India as pointed out by Welspun New Energy CEO Kapil Maheshwari in this article. Other 2 competitors of Kirloskar Pneumatics are Elgi Equipments and Ingersoll-Rand. You have to compress the hydrogen which can be stored and then transmitted as well.
Welspun New Energy which is a subsidiary of Welspun Enterprise is a player in Green hydrogen and has bid for electrolyzer manufacturing under PLI scheme.. It also building green ammonia plant in Orissa with an investment of 13,860 cr. I am not sure of the funding for this but Welspun is a big conglomerate. Torrent Power is also another player. A lot of interesting things are happening in Green hydrogen space and India could be a leading manufacturer unlike trying to catch up like it is doing for solar. Obviously there will be tough competition from the Chinese companies.

Atlas copco is the big daddy though not listed in India. Despite these three any maybe other competitors Kirloskar seems to have taken right and aggressive steps in last couple of years. Will get some content organized and start a new thread on the same (else it will get closed by admins)

After Green Hydrogen , now it is time for a PLI.scheme for Green Ammonia- Govt announces incentives Scheme to produce-5,50,000 MT of Green-Ammonia

Game plan is clear. Green Ammonia can be easily produced from Green Hydrogen is a versatile chemical with a plethora of utilities.

(1) Ammonia is a liquid at room temp.and can be easily transported / shipped though containers, tankers, pipelines and so can be easily exported to other countries
(2) A direct feed stock to fertiliser plants and many other industries needing green hydrogen as feedstock
(3) Ammonia can be cracked back to produce green hydrogen which can be used as a fuel in vehicles and ammonia can be directly used as fuel and for power generation
(4) Ammonia can be directly used for power generation both through thermal and fuel cell route.

Good article to read, In this article electrolyser manufacturing global giant JohnCockerill name to be included. They have completed several mega projects globally. JohnCockerill had an agreement in india to provide electrolyser to Greenko. They are in the eligible list for PLI incentive scheme also.
With thanks

Assume it is not listed JohnCockerill India. It is Greenco India with parent JohnCockerill support. Maybe some engineering work spills over to Indian sub.

John cockerill is a listed entity

True. But which entity is involved in Green H2 initiative, parent or Indian entity. Indian entity seems to be center for steel only.

Above agreement for H2 is between parent and Greenco India.

YES IT IS BSE LISTED COMPANY. Its bse CODE 500147, COCKERILL.

Maharashtra Govt signs MOU for Green Hydrogen projects worth INR 276,300 crore
