Semiconductor world - CPU/GPU Wars

Which company he is talking about who is making the new kind of chips?

US-based chip startup Cerebras Systems. Just read the full article it is mentioned.

More to do with supercomputers I think. Govts usually focus there.

  1. What about yields etc? What about price?
  2. What about the elephant in the room for everyone ā€¦ software? CUDA? Governments will write their custom stack for their work. So they may not care about software libraries much.

The question of yields is answered below by cerebrasā€™ chief system architect. Very very interesting.

This looks very interesting. A million cores with Integrated memory would make latency a thing of history. I am interested in buying this, any idea on valuation, some brokers are quoting 4.5B$ and one is quoting 8.5B$. Would appreciate some help on this. For reference Iā€™m working in north america itself.

I have stayed away from Nvidia and the like because I always thought there was more value in companies taking money from customers further down the chain like the apple and microsoft of the industry. Also being as risk averse as I am it was an easier bet to invest in the Nasdaq100 and ride this wave. What companies do you think have the best trajectory in this sector besides Nvidia and AMD? Does Intel stand a chance to come back?

Until Intel really fixes itā€™s board, I do not see their situation improving. They have had a board that was just fixed on the stock price without caring for innovation. This had put them in the spot they currently are in

Broadcom is the #2 in AI hardware play.

Intel is on life support. You have to decide what you want from intel. You want foundry or design?
If you want foundry, then are you guaranteed to get some foundry share when it is split? at 6B$/quarter of fixed costs intel is fast running out of runway to fly. Only USG can fund this cash guzzler. THey are doing furniture sale nowā€¦ mobileeye, altera etc is on sale it appears.

In light of the US govt entities coming out and recommending companies use Intel for their requirements, how does this change their runway?

That is filled with issues

  1. TSMC is already fabbing in arizona. Apple and AMD are booked next year - TSMC is basically making in america and actually with better margins than intel. fabs need volume. TSMC is a 100 pound gorilla in this. they can go 10 ten rounds while intel is struggling to do one round.
  2. The issue with intel is their margins. They can bring say 18nm to market, but what about the margins? They will need customers for that and what about volume? If they are that good, why is intel fabbing in tsmc? Example: Intel Lunar lake top two tiles are fabbed in TSMC (entire logic!). In light of this, can the govt force others to fab at intel? Highly unlikely.
  3. IMHO, if US govt is serious, they need to sacrifice design and take over foundry. Then, I believe they can nudge companies to use govtā€™s fabs. Until then, Intel cannot do design and then expect their competitors to fab with them. First force intel baba to use intel fabs for all their products!

Cerebras has filed S1.
Glimpse of current state.

Most of the revenue is from middle east.

I donā€™t like it :). What if usa loosens its restrictions on what AI can be sold? Would these guys want to buy from cerebras or the current AI king? H100 and H200 volumes are still ramping. Dow hard they will have to justify their customers spending on them instead of these? Sovereign AI race is only starting it appears. They might find their rightful place. But at what value are you willing to buy?

Semiconductor Manufacturing Hype cycle in India

While doing some research on all the news coming out of India with our recent chip manufacturing plans and aspirations in Davos , decided to do some research on the status of some plans that were announced in May last year.

Seems like a lot of factories were supposed to come up in Gujarat.
India's Semiconductor Sector: Three New Plants Get Approved
But nothing to show for yet. If you do a quick search for these factories on Google Maps in Dholera and Sanand in Gujarat you see nothing. Infact Tata seems to have marked the factory area on Google maps and even had a event at the site but land still looks barren more than 6 months later

Anybody have any insights from the industry or locally?

In light of recent events at Davos seems like G42 and Blackrock are putting serious money into their Data centre ambitions. Will this bode well for cerebras?

There is something new called Deepseekā€¦sounds impressive

Long but sensational read

Took me a while to go through this. Yes Nvidia is the king now but until someone comes along and offers the same or a better product for cheaper they will not loose their dominance
Companies are spending a lot on compute currently but dont think this investments will get wasted
