My Investing Journey: From Options Trading To Business Research

Hello everyone,

I am Rahul Singh. I come from an Electronics and Communication Engineering background and have been actively studying markets for the last 8–9 years.

Most of my market journey so far has been through active market participation, derivatives, sector observation, and understanding how risk, price, sentiment and fundamentals interact. Over time, I have realised that trading can teach risk management, but long-term wealth creation requires a deeper understanding of businesses.

That is the main reason I am starting this thread. I want to use this space to document my journey from being mainly a trader/market participant to becoming a more disciplined business-focused investor.

My current areas of interest are:

  1. Indian IT services and how AI may change the traditional billing-hours model

  2. Healthcare, especially hospitals, diagnostics and specialty care

  3. Financials, particularly private banks, NBFCs and credit cycles

  4. Capital goods, power transmission and domestic capex-linked businesses

  5. Consumer and auto businesses where premiumisation is visible

My research framework is still evolving, but currently I try to study a business through these lenses:

  1. Industry structure and long-term opportunity size

  2. Revenue growth quality

  3. Margin durability and operating leverage

  4. Balance sheet strength and capital allocation

  5. Valuation comfort versus growth visibility

  6. Key risks that can break the thesis

One area I am currently studying is the impact of Generative AI on Indian IT services. My working hypothesis is that AI may not destroy Indian IT demand, but it may disrupt the old revenue model based on billing hours, large delivery teams, testing, support and maintenance work. I am trying to understand which companies can move toward outcome-based pricing, domain-specific workflows, platforms, AI-led productivity, and revenue-per-employee growth.

I am not posting this as a recommendation or expert view. I am posting it as a learning thread. I would be grateful for criticism, questions and feedback from senior members.

My objective is to improve the quality of my thinking, avoid shallow narratives, and slowly build a disciplined research process.

Disclosure: This is only for learning and discussion. Nothing written here should be considered investment advice. I may or may not hold any company discussed in this thread, and my views may change as new data comes in.
