Manoj's Portfolio in making

Hello All,

I recently heard about this forum from the SOIC YouTube channel. I consider myself a Novice, though I started investing in 2017. I started focusing seriously on my investment portfolio last year (2024). Like most newcomers, I also made the same mistake; I used to add any stocks based on news and influenced by so-called finance influencers.

Below is my portfolio, which contains 45+ stocks at present. I am looking for advice and suggestions to reduce the no of stocks to 25-30 by restructuring my portfolio. I am looking for expert advice/suggestions to learn about portfolio building strategy and apply to my current portfolio.

Reduce no of srocks to 15-18 to get good benefit

Thank you @seeankur, I have a dilemma about a few leggard stocks, should I exit now after waiting 5 years or so

Dr Lal → Enter at all time high price and holding since then but no return
Astral → Didn’t exit or book profit when it was ATH and now its close to my buying level
Pidilite → Didn’t exit or book profit when it was ATH and now its close to my buying level
GMM → Didn’t exit/book profit when it was ATH, but later booked losses and average out still giving negative return but I am hopeful
AlkylAmine → Same story
TataMotors → Same story

Can someone please guide me on what strategy I should follow in such cases to make a strategic decision instead of an emotional decision?

A few suggestions

  1. Try to calculate the XIRR of the portfolio as a whole. If the Portfolio XIRR is in the range of 13-16% then you are better off investing in Mutual Funds, as your time investment reduces significantly. Your time invested should yield a certain return. If you are unable to generate alpha over an index, it is just better to hold MF or Index Funds.

  2. Number of Stocks can be reduced. If you have microcap companies, then you can hold more than 15 stocks, but for a mid and small cap category, investing in not more than 15 stocks is better. This ensures you have a considerable amount invested in one stock.

  3. You can allocate 50-60% of your Portfolio to MF and remaining to direct stocks. Once you are confident of your investing principles and processes, you can shift your MFs to Stocks. It works for me. If I pick wrong stocks, only 20% of my portfolio will suffer and the rest 80% continues to perform, but I ensure not to shift from MFs to Stocks to cover my losses.

Thanks @ishu for your valuable suggestions.

Zerodha Kite shows XIRR - 18% and I have allocated 50% in large cap and 25% in midcap and 25% smallcap.

I have identified few largeCap stocks for exit - HDFCBANK, PIDILITE, and TCS.
