There looks an increased chance of el nino effect during 2014. This could have a negative effect on crop production this year. In 2009 too we saw very severe drought due to el nino. Wonder how much kaveri, pi Ind, dhanuka and others might get impacted.

How big is the is permission given by Veerappa Moily the environment minister for Genetically modified seeds in crops other then cotton?

Is this a game changer event for Seeds industry in general n Kaveri in particular which led to Monsanto rising over last few days n todayā€™s UC n Kaveri meteoric rise?

Mithun Chand ED of sounded very optimistic when query in this regard was raised by me in concall saying market opportunity size could increase to 40000 crore due to this step.

Views invited as Kaveri is top performing holding for many VPers.

Hi Donald,

Monsoon is expected to be not so good this year. Also there are chances of El Nino.

In light of this, do we still expect 20% growth in q1?

How is the ground situation in Andhra?

Why should it matter if a good long term story is marred by one yearā€™s nil/bad growth?

Monsanto hits 5% upper circuit as regulator revalidates GM crops

Wonder how much of this is really true. Lots of accusations, but raises some serious questions.I am not fully convinced of the documentary and want to see if they are biased. Iā€™m now more interested in the other sideā€™s argument (GMO supporters). Itā€™s super unclear and hard to believe that we were just pressured by corporate lobbying to not test these things.

I read this yesterday on Business Line: (Genetic Edge)

http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/opinion/genetic-edge/article5831191.ece

Iā€™m not that read in these issues so no point in commenting but I feel land is a limited resource and the population is growing at a rate, say, 5% CAGR then we need to do something about this. The author also makes a point that we would need less inputs like water, pesticide/manure so net-net it is worth trying out GM crops.

Another perspective: (Genetically Modified)

Kaveri Seed Company Ltd has informed BSE that a Meeting of the Compensation Committee of the Board of Directors of the Company will be held on April 09, 2014, to consider allotment of 1,54,615 Equity Shares of Rs. 2/- each of the Company under the ESOP Scheme 2009.

Hi All,

Thais news is important. Thanks for sharing Prashant.

Further, I have few questions-

a) can we assume loss of Mahyco market share will be the gain of Kaveri (not entirely, say atleast 10-15% of market share).

b) How much it will translate to Kaveriā€™s topline ?

c) Is the action taken, should be seen as alarming for other GM seed players ? Will same can happens with Kaveri also ??

Request all to share their views. Thanks in advance.

sorry for this basic question, i understand kaveri seeds got license for bt cotton from mahyco-monsanto JV. does mahyco, kaveri and other players manufacture bt cotton seeds with technology licensed from mahyco-monsanto JV, if so, wouldnā€™t this quality issue have impact on kaveri seeds as well?

Thanks,

Augustine

I wonā€™t be surprised of some of the facts being reality, because USA has been guilty of succumbing to vested corporate interests in the past.Iā€™m currently reading the book ā€œFault Linesā€ where Rajan talks about the wrong incentives making a system of individual rational actors unsustainable which can be a possibility here too.

I wonā€™t say Iā€™m deeply influenced by video, but effect of negative black swan event is disruptive in this business, question is what probability one attaches to this possibility ?

Kaveri derives approximately 50% of its revenue from cotton. Its top brands are Jadoo and Jackpot, and both display "Bollgard II " on the packaging cover ! Bollgard is trademark of Monsanto, and it is already preparing the launch of Bollgard III.

Interestingly, Kaveriā€™s AR has no mention of Monsanto in the three yearsĆ¢ reports that I looked at, 2011-2013.

And yet, royalty is about 10% of sales and in comparison, the R&D expense is about 1.4% of sales. This statistic tells its own tale - and even this 1.4% includes farm salaries and other expenditure on its R&D farm, not all of the measly 1.4% is towards PhD scientists

@ Krishna Agarwal: No, Kaveri will not benefit, as it is not acompetitor, but a sales partner of Monsanto.

@Augustine: Yes, the impact will be felt by Kaveri as well. Lets see how this plays out now.

Here is a fairly recent article by an Indian scientist.
