Between China and Taiwan, I would prefer investing in China once its economy stabilises and then rebounds a bit (assuming it does happen at some point!). Taiwan is highly vulnerable to being caught in the cross fire between US and China which will be bad for its economy. Plus Taiwan is dependent on semiconductor exports, a space which is getting highly competitive with many emerging countries including India eyeing a piece of the semiconductor economy.

Hang Seng index is in a bull market thanks to these stocks | Invezz
Although its premature China investments have started doing good for me in my personal portfolio.

Amazing insights on China:

There are three possible sources of investment: one, the property sector, which is contracting and there’s nothing the government can do about that. Two, infrastructure investment, which is a bigger problem than the property sector. The central government would like to rein it in because they recognize that it’s the source of much of the bad investment and debt at the local government level. Three, and this was their magic trick to solve all problems, was to pour investment into the manufacturing sector. The problem with that is, if you are a small country, you can do that and nobody will notice. But when you’re the second largest economy, 17% of world GDP, and you already account for 31% of global manufacturing, you can’t do that unless the rest of the world is willing to accommodate the increase in your share of global production.

After sitting on the sidelines & observing for quite some time, I entered China via Mirae Asset Hang Seng TECH ETF based on fundamentals with Half position size & will deploy fully once technicals start improving.

The story is always woven to fit the price narrative…Everyone is bearish on China and going by basics You have to be greedy when others are fearful…Of course, you have to ensure fundamentals are in place.

Once it crosses 30 EMA & 9 EMA crosses 30 EMA on a weekly timeframe, momentum will follow

Aye aye, Captain ! two cents from a new recruit:

“They say the economic outlook is still weak…” Based on what I read in the weekly Platts report on polymer prices (attached below, from ongoing week, for your viewing pleasure).

There is also a link which has been discussed on VP >Welcome to the end of the biggest commodity boom - The Economic Times. It’s talking about a commodity oversupply until 2028.

So, maybe I’m still not getting clear direction about the whole China thing, especially since I’ve just started out in this investing game and never tried things with even domestic focused funds .

But who knows? Maybe Turkey’s central bank-based funds might just do better in the short term—if such funds exist! A rookie taking a shot in the dark here.

Summarising below news article.
1.The china focused ETF volumes spiked last week.
2.The demand for hangseng ETF is visible in the volume ~10k (HANGSENGBEES),Value ~30 Cr and MAHKTECH value ~26Cr.
During last week for average 20 sessions trade value for HANGSENGBEES was ~3cr and MAHKTECH value ~2Cr

Chinese indices have zoomed in a month.

Can someone enlighten me on the ETF, never done it…but it looks interesting.

If look for a short term, may be 6 month or 1 year.(because i see my small cap PF wont move much in these times and if i want do monkey moves with extra money) How does ETF work, what is this hefty premiums ?

People are giving any price to buy MAHKTECH ETFs. The current NAV of ETF (03/10/2024) is 17.97. Today’s trading price is 22.4. A premium of 24.65% on its real NAV value. It used to be in the 5-8% range but has nearly tripled now because of the heavy demand.

NAV is similar to what you see in Mutual funds but in the case of ETFs, you can buy these units on exchanges directly.

Could you please point me to the site where one can view daily NAV of ETFs? A Google search simply takes me to the chart and it shows the LTP.

Low Liquidity is a double-edged sword in case of ETF, You get a premium if things are going well like right now & You will also get a discount if things go bad.

My go-to is to check Inav (Creation Unit and iNAV for Mirae Asset Hang Seng TECH ETF | Mirae Asset) Plus tracking error to make the decision accordingly.

Also, there is some currency element to be kept in mind if you have a big position, but it doesn’t matter much on a low position size though

China market is closed for a week-long holiday, should ideally wait to see what happens once it opens
