Introducing phreakonomics.in - Finance tools

@phreakv6 when will be August exim data reflected in the website?

It could be another couple of weeks before MoC releases it. It should be available on the site as soon as they release it as everything is automated now.

Hi @phreakv6

Great tool! I was just checking under Macro trend -> Books Publishing and Printing

https://phreakonomics.in/export-import/macro?startDate=2000-04-01&endDate=2018-09-01&currency=inr&commodity=144&country=&country[]=0&consolidation=fy

So looking at the chart, would it be fair to say that Imports of Books, Publishing and Printing is on a downtrend. Exports have been more or less stable. This means that Indian publishers and printers have started manufacturing right here in India for consumption of Indians. It is a clear case of Import substitution.

Digital publishing might be making this possible. Companies like Repro can be a beneficiary here if the trend continues and stays.

Or one of the main reasons may be projects like Library Genesis which lead to a lot of demand destruction among book buyers as they now can access any book for free.

Books being an intellectual property, I presume, import substitution theory is not applicable to them.

August Export/Import data is out.

Paper exports seem to be growing again in Aug

https://phreakonomics.in/export-import/micro?startDate=2000-04-01&endDate=2018-09-01&currency=inr&commodity=146&country=&country[]=0&type=exports&consolidation=month

and imports of Waste and pulp at all time high (However volumes are almost same)

https://phreakonomics.in/export-import/micro?type=imports&country[0]=0&commodity=149&startDate=2000-04-01&endDate=2018-09-01&currency=inr&consolidation=month

Marine products continue to degrow despite INR depreciation

Organic Chemicals continues the steady uptrend

https://phreakonomics.in/export-import/micro?startDate=2000-04-01&endDate=2018-09-01&currency=inr&commodity=132&country=&country[]=0&type=exports&consolidation=month

so does Inorganic chemicals

https://phreakonomics.in/export-import/micro?startDate=2000-04-01&endDate=2018-09-01&currency=inr&commodity=131&country=&country[]=0&type=exports&consolidation=month

Agro-Chemicals continues trend

Dyes and Dye intermediates as well

https://phreakonomics.in/export-import/micro?startDate=2000-04-01&endDate=2018-09-01&currency=inr&commodity=127&country=&country[]=0&type=exports&consolidation=month

Please do post any other interesting trends you spot.

Hi Everyone,
I have another exciting idea to present, in time for the results season coming up. This is a notifier for BSE announcements using a pub-sub model.

https://phreakonomics.in/bse-notifier

This is not new as there are other threads on this very forum where there are some solutions available but I found them deficient in some ways - they did not have push notifications, or they weren’t reliable or they required app installations or they required third-party add-ons for showing notifications. All of which were too cumbersome for me. So I wanted to re-invent ground up.

I wanted a real-time notifier and these were my primary goals

  1. No app installations
  2. Push notifications are a must
  3. Should work in both mobiles (android primarily, as I use android) and desktops
  4. Simple to use

Nice to have

  1. Email notifications
  2. History of notifications sorted by day for stocks I am interested in

I have achieved the primary goals and if you are interested, please try it out.

  1. First get yourself registered - Its a very simple process. I need it to save your watchlist.

42%20PM

After you register, you will have to confirm your email and then login.

  1. Enable Push Notification

20%20PM

Click on the “Push Disabled” button to Enable push. Your browser will request permissions - Please accept. Please note that this requires something called “Service Worker” and not all browsers have it - especially Safari on Mac/iOS doesn’t. Please do yourself a favour and use Google Chrome. Push Notifications work beautifully on Chrome.

Once you enable it, it should look like this.

06%20PM

  1. Add stocks - Use the search box and add as many stocks as you want to your watchlist for getting announcements real-time.

That’s it!

When the company in your watchlist posts announcements to the exchange, you will get a notification like this (on my mac)

and this - on my android phone (Please note that you will have to login to phreakonomics.in on your phone and in the BSE Notifier module, enable Push Notification to get notifications, if you registered through the desktop. You can receive notifications on any number of devices this way).

Clicking on the notification will take you directly to the pdf. This is especially useful for Quarterly Results.

I noticed that some of the existing solutions fare poorly as number of people using the system increase or if the stocks in their watchlists increase. I have taken special care on the performance so that this is not a problem. I hope it performs well.

A word of caution - Volatility is very high minutes after the result, so please trade with caution if you intend to use the information for that purpose.

As always, please let me know if something’s broken.

Disclaimer - I will not be responsible for any gains or losses you might make using this tool. I intend to keep this tool free for the foreseeable future but future is not really foreseeable. This is a hobby project, so I might be slow in fixing things or adding features.

All set and loaded. Let’s see how it performs.

One simple query - Is it mandatory that chrome needs to run in background or the notifications would keep coming even when chrome is not running in background (in android device)?

@devaki.tripathy - I have been using it for almost 5 months now and so far it has worked well for me. I hope it works just as well with the increased load too. I think it should. Let’s see.

Chrome needn’t run in the background. It needn’t be open at all and you will still get notifications which is why I chose this approach.

@phreakv6. Compliments for introducing a tool for getting BSE notification on companies. I have activated your tool in my desktop. With Push enabled, notification is not appearing as and when it is notified. Again, just now logged in, I saw some notification, but before reading it disappeared. I do not know how to bring it back to display again.May be you can look into it. Thank you.

Which scrip/announcement did this happen for?

You don’t have to be logged in to see notifications. The browser also needn’t be open.

I don’t quite know how notifications are handled on windows as I haven’t used one in a long time. If you click on the notification though, the notification is designed to close and the pdf will open in the browser (on desktops). On mobile devices, the pdf will be downloaded to the Downloads folder.

Is anyone else having problems with the app so far? Please let me know. All feedback is useful in improving the experience. Thanks!

Thank you for your prompt response.

This happened for Magma Fincorp.

Let me observe today and will let you know. Thank you.

In windows 2010, there is a notification icon at the extreme right corner next to date and time. If you click the same, all disappeared notifications will appear.

Hi Phreakv6 !

Thanks for the wonderful tool.

But, i am seeing blank page after clicking on Current tab [https://phreakonomics.in/export-import/current]

@devaki.tripathy I noticed this too with some scrips for Investor Complaints notifications. I presume its confined to this type alone. I am traveling so will look to fixing it this weekend. Until then please look-up the notification directly on BSE for the notifications that have the issue. I think the name of the Company still shows up in the notification for these.

@CogitoErgoSum - Will look into it this weekend. Thank you for catching this bug.

@devaki.tripathy - I have fixed this issue now. You will have to Disable and Enable push notifications to get the updated service worker file though I think.

@CogitoErgoSum - Fixed

I hope everyone is able to get notifications now that the results reason is underway. Please let me know if you notice anything off.

Hello Everyone,
I have one more module ready. This is a simple Shareholding slicer/dicer.

https://phreakonomics.in/shareholding/index

Simply search for the company you want to lookup and the results should look something like this.

https://phreakonomics.in/shareholding/index/PCJEWELLER

This helps in seeing how shareholding pattern has moved over time. This is especially helpful in identifying distribution (Retail holding going up while FPI/MF/HNI holding going down, along with the price) and accumulation (the reverse). This was how I was able to identify weird stuff happening in Vakrangee, Fiberweb, BEPL, to name a few.

You can sort by quarter to see who were the biggest holders in the quarter. This helps in seeing how those holders moved in the subsequent quarters. For eg. you can sort by Sept-17 and see how things moved in the last year.

The information shown is the diluted shareholding. I do have the undiluted as well as actual number of shares information. I will try to add some toggles for viewing that information. I noticed diluted is the most relevant info so I have made it the default.

I intended to provide more functionality in terms of merging entities (sometimes name are slightly different) either manually or through some intelligence. The chart at the top as well was conceived to pit shareholding against price. Had an export to excel as well in mind. Such improvements unfortunately have to wait as I have found some better ideas to occupy my time for now. All these are pieces of a larger puzzle for me so I find my mind flitting from one to another. I haven’t really tested this much either.

Hope you like it. Please let me know if something’s broken.

Disclaimer: As always, I am not responsible for your gains or losses or the accuracy of the information. Please cross-check with company dispatches when in doubt.

Its a great work, no doubt. Question is are you planning to update the crawler every time the BSE/NSE website changes? Seems like hard thing to do is look for changes happening at their end.

Bharat Rasayan SHP has only one data point. Requesting you to please check and repair.

Thanks @phreakv6. You literally saved me couple of hours of work every quarter, as I was doing something similar in excel. It was a big headache to update every quarter…
