Before researching a business, I like to have a basic understanding of its place and position within the sector’s ecosystem. For me, visualisation helps, be it in the form of a value chain or a value web, as the case may be.
To do this, I built something just for my own needs, which I am sharing here in the hope that it may benefit others.
This helps me at least understand things like where in the chain or the industry web the margins exist, who controls the relationship with the customer, or where the strengths/ weaknesses of the industry lie.
It’s not infallible and just provides a perspective- a bird’s-eye view.
The site is www.industrymindmap.com I’m just sharing it here in case someone finds it useful.
Depending on the industry/ sector, at various stages you can look at the companies involved with a basic overview of their roles.
Over the years, this forum has provided me with a lot of learning; hopefully this helps others.
Feel free to let me know if you want any industry/ sector added, or, of course, any suggestions.
Wow, What You have done is quite exceptional.
I have a small suggest, if it is possible to do reverse mapping and present that data.
For an example i searched a company “JSW Steel” then it would also get to know where it lies in which value chain.
Just took a quick glance and it looks really good. Something I had always thought should exist. Kudos! Will explore more and share constructive feedback if got any.
Add a global search that actually searches all companies that are into that value chain.
For example, instead of searching for a company, I type transformers, and it takes me directly to the transformer page and all its companies.
Another is adding an AI chatbot that scans through all the data and gives answers to questions like Which stages of India’s power chain have the highest ROCE? or Show me companies participating in 5+ value chains.
Another one is i don’t know if it’s possible but can we make a screener which finds Industry or value chains in which the companies you mentioned showed a median sales growth of, let’s say, 15% and it will show all industries or value chains companies which are showing such growth, just like we do on screener for individual companies and then we can further do research in those specific industries or value chains themselves
Added some more chains based on suggestions received.
Also a way to search for companies within chains - as well as search an entire chain and the companies servicing various aspects of it, with latest financial data.
Added an ‘ask’ feature that can explain the basic working and provide a word based number search. (Still a work in progress)
This is a good way to explain the complete life cycle and help people understand the value chain while looking at certain industries or themes currently being spoken….some of the key sectors or industries which need to be added:
Oil, gas and petrochemicals, Cement and building materials, Organised retail and e-commerce, Chemicals and specialty chemicals, Aviation, hotels and travel
Few other suggestions we could consider :
a. The site’s core claim is that companies are placed “where they actually earn their money.” But when a company appears in multiple stages — and with 2,196 entries across 753 tickers, the average company sits in about three — there’s no indication of whether that stage is 5% of its revenue or 80%. That matters most exactly where the site is most useful.E.g. Reliance would span six or seven stages once oil and gas exists. We can have a weight field per entry — even a coarse band (dominant / significant / minor) taken from segment reporting would transform the maps. A pure play filter for an investor trying to get exposure to a specific stage, the question isn’t “who operates here” but “who only operates here.” That’s a genuinely differentiated screen no existing tool offers
I am updating my message to write this. This is deceptively simple and truly brilliant. And it’s extremely useful.
I can see you have been constantly updating it. Those write ups, you have written them? Again, they are brilliant. They have brevity, yet tell you what you exactly need to know.
Have tried to incorporate changes based on the suggestions received.
@Hemanpower’s suggestion on weighted entries based on value map revenue contribution is what I have been working on; however, the paucity of a segment-wise breakup has meant there are only broad-based estimates available, which I have added, but they do little to add meaningful value.
This article I came across explains the whole thought process behind this endeavour - to understand not just where existing value sits for a sector, but what opportunities are emerging and where they fit.
It’s an interesting read for anyone invested in the power/energy sector in India… I plan to use information/data like this to expand on the value chains to position ourselves correctly across the sectors we choose for the future.
