ā€œthe point isnā€™t that you could actually make money if you bought a rusty oil tanker. The point is capitalism is uniquely incapable of properly administering goods in a crisis, or any other time. Itā€™s the same reason why farmers are destroying crops and dumping milk while people go hungry, and why Iā€™m considering buying an oil tanker.ā€

After spending 4.5 hours on Berkshire Hathaway annual meeting
Confuse on two extremes
1ā€¦US FED reaction was so fast that He didnā€™t get a chance to buy business at his price even though he is sitting on lots of cash

2ā€¦As he narrated history of last US depression
which may suggest that this may turn in to depression (something serious then resession)and there may be chance to deploy money

Please anyone can explain this between the lines meaning

Thanks

Would recommend VP members listen to Warren Buffett at Berkshire 2020 Annual Shareholders Meeting.
You can learn about his views on the following.

  1. Industries such as Retail, Insurance, Airlines, Energy, Oil in the current context.
  2. Why they sold all of 10% stake in top four US airlines bought earlier at a loss
  3. Why they hold USD 128 billion in cash/T-bills
  4. Investing in S&P 500 Index fund
  5. Dow Jones index during the great depression and laterā€¦etcā€¦

It is amazing that at age 89 he has the stamina to speak for 4.5 hours almost non-stop!.
Video link is already posted earlier in the thread. Transcript link below.

He has excellent skill to research business model of a company and how it dominating the market. For example - the way he is giving facts about Asian Paint, i doubt even CEO / Promoters of Asian Paint might be not knowing the facts about Asian Paint which Saurabh do know !!
I donā€™t do much research but just keep ready the list of companies which Saurabh loves! However, I could not execute the list till date looking at very high PE. However, I am not loosing patience and keep waiting one day 2008 like crisis will bring all companies down and will buy these favorite companies, till time I am keeping money in FD of HDFC bank!!

If the entire industry, Nerolac, Asian Paints and Berger have rised roughly the same amount, (Berger is considerably more), isnt this indication of strength of industry and not of management ? In a rising tide all boats riseā€¦
