I recently met veterans in the Chemical Industry, who deal in Titanium Dioxide. Those who track Meghmani Organics may find this useful. Below are my notes.
On Titanium Dioxide (TiO2)
-
Various applications, from pigment required for paints to protective coating for PVC pipes. TiO2 manufacturing plants are always located along the coast as beach sand is key RM.
-
Mainly imported from China. Only 2-3 manufacturers in India - two are government owned pvt cos in Kerala and then Kilburn Chemicals (which Meghmani acquired) in Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu.
-
The quality/grade of TiO2 manufactured by one of the govt. owned private companies are excellent and are exported to the US at very good prices.
-
Kilburn Chemicals - Heavy political linkages and not so good reputation. It changed hands many times (I think it was called VV Titanium earlier - part of the VV group). Company was going through some tough times. Quality of their TiO2 is mediocre.
-
Customers which use higher grades of TiO2 swear by Dupont for their quality. They don’t easily switch.
-
TiO2 is an important chemical. It’s a key RM for Sudarshan Chemicals and accounts for 20-30% of RM cost for paint companies like Asian Paints.
On Clean Science & Technology
-
Very high barrier to entry (technology). Only 1-2 manufacturers in the world.
-
Exports some of its products to China.
-
Good management and promising long-term potential.
