About the Investment Journey category

This category is for long-form, first-person accounts of an individual investor’s experience.

The rest of the forum is organized around businesses. Company threads exist so that a stock can be examined properly by many people over time. What they do not capture is the other half of the picture: how an investor arrives at a decision, sizes it, lives with it, and eventually gets out. That is what belongs here.

A journey thread should cover how you began investing, the framework you use to identify and evaluate ideas, how you think about position sizing and concentration, and how your approach has been revised over the years. Returns are worth mentioning, but only with the context that makes them meaningful: the period covered, the drawdowns along the way, and how much turnover was involved. A number without that context tells the reader very little.

We would encourage members to write about the decisions that did not work out. Threads that record only the successful positions are of limited use. The holding that was retained long after the thesis broke, the exit made too early, the allocation that was larger than the conviction justified, all of these are more instructive than another account of a stock that went up.

How this differs from existing categories

Company threads deal with a single business. Portfolio threads are largely point-in-time snapshots put up for review. This category is intended for a single continuing thread per member, revisited over years, so that the evolution of a process is visible in one place rather than scattered across a dozen discussions.

Guidelines

Please maintain one thread per member, titled in the format “[Username]'s Investing Journey”, so the archive remains navigable. Disclose your holdings whenever you name a stock, and indicate where a position is a significant part of your portfolio. This category is not for recommendations, target prices, or tips; describe what you did and the reasoning behind it, and leave readers to draw their own conclusions. Detailed discussion of a company’s fundamentals should continue in that company’s thread, with a link from here where relevant.

When responding to another member’s thread, please engage with the reasoning rather than the person. Members who post their errors publicly are doing the forum a service.

Why a separate category

Accounts of this kind are already being written, but they currently sit inside portfolio QnA and general discussion threads where they are difficult to locate later. A dedicated category makes them searchable and allows a member’s entire thinking, across market cycles, to be read in sequence.
