About the Sector Scan category

Sector-level research on Indian listed companies — value chains, demand drivers, capacity, policy and unit economics. Industry first, stocks second.

Why this category exists

Most research on ValuePickr starts with a company and works outward. Sector Scan does the opposite. It starts with the industry — how the value chain is structured, where margins pool, what capacity is coming up, what policy is changing — and treats individual companies as the output of that analysis rather than the starting point.

The aim is that before you form a view on a business, you can come here and understand the pond it swims in.

How this differs from company threads

A company thread asks whether a particular business is a good one. A sector thread asks whether the industry can support good businesses at all, and which position in the chain captures the economics.

So: pricing power, import competition, utilisation levels, regulation, cycle position and capital intensity belong here. Quarterly results, management quality, promoter conduct, valuation debates and accounting questions belong in the company thread. If a sector discussion narrows to one name, link across and continue there.

What a good topic here looks like

Start a thread only if you can do the initial mapping work yourself. A one-line question about a sector is a reply somewhere, not a new topic.

The composer will load a template when you start a topic. Work through it, delete what genuinely doesn’t apply, and keep the headings so threads stay comparable to each other. The two sections that matter most are the listed universe (with links to existing company threads) and what to track — the handful of indicators that will tell us over the next few years whether the sector view is playing out. That table is what keeps a thread useful long after the opening post.

Ground claims in primary sources: annual reports, concalls, regulatory filings, industry association data, government reports. Where a number comes from a company presentation or a consultant’s projection, say so — it is not the same as a filed figure.

Housekeeping

One thread per sector. Check before starting a new one; if a thread exists, add to it. Where a sub-segment grows large enough to stand alone, a moderator can split it.

Opening posts are wiki-editable so the tables can be kept current. If you have newer data, update the table and note the change in a reply rather than letting the top post go stale.

Please tag your topic with the relevant sector.

Disclosure is mandatory whenever you mention a company you hold — invested, not invested, or transacted in the last 30 days.

No recommendations, price targets, or calls to buy or sell. This category is for building a shared map of an industry, not for directing anyone’s portfolio.
